    Thermal Degradation of Poly(Dimethyl Itaconate)

    Get PDF
This article investigates the thermal degradation behaviour of poly(dimethyl itaconate), performed by TG and other degradation procedures, in order to establish the kinetics of the reaction and the probable mechanism of thermal degradation. From TG curves and from GC-MS observations, the occurrence of a dezipping reaction, producing predominantly monomer, was observed, preceded by carbon-carbon bond scissions in the lateral substituents. The results are compared with those known from the literature for the structurally similar poly(methyl methacrylate)

Total Least Sqares Method for Solving Geodetic Tasks.

Doktorska teza je posvećena primeni tehnike potpune metode najmanjeg kvadrata...A doctoral thesis deals with the application of Total Least Squares (TLS) techniques for parameters estimation of mathematical models for various geodetic problems. Total Least Squares is a relatively new technique of parameters model estimation. The first research in the field of mathematics dating from the early eighties and the first applications appeared in various nongeodetic disciplines. Studies on possibility of applications in the parameters estimation of geodetic models are of later date, there are about ten years ago (Kupferer, 2005 Schaffrin, 2006). Research is developing towards adjustment TLS geodetic problems in the sense finding a solution that include different accuracy and mutual correlation of data (measurement results). In order to achieve this, rather than solutions obtained by decomposition of the extended matrix model on the singular values (SVD), solutions based on the minimization of Lagrange's objective function (Euler-Lagrange's method) are developed..

Purpose: To investigate the effect of mebendazole on an in vivo solid tumor model of fibrosarcoma in hamsters. Methods: 24 Syrian golden hamsters of both sexes with the approximate body  weight of 100g were randomly distributed in 2 experimental and 2 control groups, with 6 animals in each group. BHK-21/C13 cells (2 x 106) in 1 mL Glasgow Minimum Essential Medium (GMEM) were injected subcutaneously into the back of each animal in 3 groups. The experimental groups were treated with mebendazole  (460 mg/kg) via a gastric tube on a daily basis, immediately after tumor inoculation. In addition, one experimental group received deoxycholic acid 20 mg/kg once a day. After 2 weeks, when the tumors were approximately 1 - 2 cm in the control group, all the animals were sacrificed, and their blood collected for laboratory analysis. The tumors were excised, their weight and diameters measured, and the volumes  calculated. The tumor samples were histopathologically assessed and the main organs toxicologically analyzed. Images were taken and processed by an imaging software, and Ki-67-positive cells in the tumor samples were quantified. Results: Mebendazole diminished tumor mitosis from 18.5 ± 3.02 to 13.5 ± 3.45 (p < 0.05), vasculature and tissue penetration, and increased necroses in tumor  slices. Tumor volume and weight were insignificantly attenuated. Toxicity was not observed. Conclusion: Mebendazole might be an effective non-toxic agent in sarcoma therapy. Keywords: Mebendazole, Hamsters, BHK-21/C13 cells, Fibrosarcoma therapy,  Tumor mitosi

Application of a widely-used tropical anti-worm agent, mebendazole, in modern oncology

Although clinical trials have not been completed, it has already been confirmed that mebendazole, a well-known anti-parasitic drug widely used in the tropical areas, inhibits cancer cell growth. Preclinical studies show that mebendazole notably impedes the growth of malignant and metastatic tumors such as osteosarcoma and soft tissue sarcoma, melanoma, carcinoma (lung, colorectal, breast, ovarian, hepatocellular and adrenocortical), acute myeloid leukaemia, glioblastoma multiforme and  meduloblastoma. Mebendazole can induce the depolymerization of microtubules in neoplasms and newly formed vasculature, stopping tumor growth and neoangiogenesis, along with other proposed mechanisms of action. Keywords: Anthelmintic, Mebendazole, Cancer treatment, Antimicrotubullar effect, Antineoangiogenesi

    Practical Color-Based Motion Capture

    Get PDF
Motion capture systems have been widely used for high quality content creation and virtual reality but are rarely used in consumer applications due to their price and setup cost. In this paper, we propose a motion capture system built from commodity components that can be deployed in a matter of minutes. Our approach uses one or more webcams and a color shirt to track the upper-body at interactive rates. We describe a robust color calibration system that enables our color-based tracking to work against cluttered backgrounds and under multiple illuminants. We demonstrate our system in several real-world indoor and outdoor settings

The improvement of the edge screw connection in OSB and conventional particleboard

    Get PDF
This work presents the method for improvement of direct screw connection performance in conventional particleboard (PB) and oriented strand board (OSB). It is conceived on adhesive insertion into the pilot hole prior to embedment of the screw. The tests were carried out on the PB and OSB, both presenting interior boards and with the same nominal thickness of 18 mm. Particleboard screws of the 5 mm in diameter were inserted in the edge of the board. Pilot hole diameters were 2,5 mm and 3,0 mm and the depth of embedment was 30 mm for all tests. The chosen PVAc adhesive (type 3) with the addition of wood flour as consolidator in the range from 3-10% was inserted into pilot-hole. Tests were also obtained after consequent reassembly of the screw connection in order to examine the ratio of loss in withdrawal forces in such case. It was found that the insertion of PVAc adhesive into the pilot hole and the addition of wood flour have the positive effects on the screw withdrawal force in the tested boards

Edge screw withdrawal resistance in conventional particleboard and OSB: Influence of the particles type

    Get PDF
This research was based on presumption that the changes in size and shape of wood particles are expected to have certain impact on the particleboard quality in general. Since the conventional particleboard (PB) and oriented strand board (OSB) were built of the quite diverse wood particles, they present interesting specimens in the comparison tests. In this work, the influence of the wood particles type on the edge screw holding performance of conventional particleboard and OSB was investigated. Those tests were obtained with the screw diameters of 4.0 mm, 4.5 mm and 5 mm. Depth of embedment was 30 mm for all tests and with the pilot-hole diameter kept in the range of 80-90% in respect of the screw root diameter. Additional tests of the thickness density profile and tensile strength perpendicular to the surface of the board were conducted. Since the middle layer structure of the particleboard embeds the screw body, both mentioned parameters are considered important in the aspect of the quality of the edge screw holding performance. In order to have further insight into the conformation of the middle layer the image survey was obtained on the split board section presenting the surface of the middle layer. Significant differences in the SWR performance of OSB and PB was recorded at all screw diameters. For the screw withdrawal tests parameters OSB samples showed 56-73% superior mean values then conventional PB. On the other hand, the OSB showed wider dispersions of measured withdrawal forces at all screw diameters, which might present some of the problems in certain engineering and project calculations
